Cult Mentality in the Digital Age: Carbonation, Spirituality & Influence: Who is Eligio Bishop?

Looking back at the story of Nature Boy, I often find myself wondering how one person could gain such a powerful influence over so many people. The stories, allegations, and disturbing details that have surfaced over the years leave many questioning what was happening mentally and emotionally within the minds of his followers. From spirituality and self-discovery to manipulation and control, the rise of Carbonation became far more than just an online movement — it evolved into something much darker and more complicated.

But before we unpack the psychology, influence, and culture surrounding Carbonation and its members, we first have to understand the man at the center of it all. Before he became known online as “Nature Boy,” there was Eligio Bishop — a man whose background, charisma, and controversial rise on social media would eventually capture the attention of thousands across the internet.

Born in Harlem, New York, in 1982, Eligio experienced trauma and instability from an early age after losing both of his parents and being placed into foster care alongside his siblings. He later shared allegations of abuse within the foster system before eventually being adopted by the Bishop family in New Jersey. Throughout his childhood and teenage years, he reportedly struggled with behavioral issues, identity, anger, and legal troubles. As an adult, he became a father, worked as a barber and entertainer, and later immersed himself in spirituality, veganism, and alternative lifestyles.

Using social media, Eligio began building a following through motivational speeches and controversial teachings centered around nature, consciousness, and escaping “the system.” Over time, he reinvented himself as “Nature Boy,” attracting people searching for healing, purpose, and belonging. What began as spiritual discussions and communal living would eventually grow into the controversial movement known as Carbonation.

As we continue exploring the story of Carbonation, it becomes clear that the movement was shaped by far more than social media controversy alone. Behind the persona of “Nature Boy” was a man with a complicated past, unresolved trauma, charisma, and a powerful ability to influence others searching for healing and identity. Understanding Eligio Bishop’s background does not excuse the allegations or harm connected to the group, but it does provide important context for how Carbonation was created, why so many people were drawn to it, and how spirituality, pain, and influence became deeply intertwined within the movement.

Cult Mentality in the Digital Age: Carbonation, Spirituality & Influence: Introduction

Back in 2015, I first came across the world of Nature Boy, Carbonation, and the many members connected to the movement. Like many people online at the time, I watched from a distance trying to understand the messages, the personalities, the controversies, and the influence this group seemed to have over so many individuals. Years later, the conversations surrounding Carbonation have resurfaced once again, bringing old questions, opinions, and emotions back into the spotlight.

Recently, a new Hulu documentary reignited public interest in the story, and after speaking with my friend Marta the Smarter, I decided to revisit the topic for myself with fresh eyes and a more mature perspective. She also introduced me to the YouTube channel “Hood Horror Stories,” whose coverage and commentary helped spark deeper thought and reflection about everything that unfolded around the group and its members. As I continue this blog series, I’ll be following along with some of their discussions while also adding my own thoughts, observations, and personal opinions.

This series is not about glorifying or attacking anyone involved. Instead, it’s about unpacking the layers of influence, spirituality, manipulation, social media culture, healing, trauma, and human behavior that surrounded this movement and the people caught within it. There is a lot to discuss, and through these blogs, I want to create space for honest conversation, critical thinking, and reflection as we revisit one of the internet’s most controversial modern spiritual groups.
