Cult Mentality in the Digital Age: Carbonation, Spirituality & Influence: Introduction

Back in 2015, I first came across the world of Nature Boy, Carbonation, and the many members connected to the movement. Like many people online at the time, I watched from a distance trying to understand the messages, the personalities, the controversies, and the influence this group seemed to have over so many individuals. Years later, the conversations surrounding Carbonation have resurfaced once again, bringing old questions, opinions, and emotions back into the spotlight.

Recently, a new Hulu documentary reignited public interest in the story, and after speaking with my friend Marta the Smarter, I decided to revisit the topic for myself with fresh eyes and a more mature perspective. She also introduced me to the YouTube channel “Hood Horror Stories,” whose coverage and commentary helped spark deeper thought and reflection about everything that unfolded around the group and its members. As I continue this blog series, I’ll be following along with some of their discussions while also adding my own thoughts, observations, and personal opinions.

This series is not about glorifying or attacking anyone involved. Instead, it’s about unpacking the layers of influence, spirituality, manipulation, social media culture, healing, trauma, and human behavior that surrounded this movement and the people caught within it. There is a lot to discuss, and through these blogs, I want to create space for honest conversation, critical thinking, and reflection as we revisit one of the internet’s most controversial modern spiritual groups.
